Childhood - Let Your Children Enjoy It While Lasts
While it possibly is the most carefree period in your life, childhood can be a nerve-wrecking and confusing time too. If it isn’t enough to deal with ‘fitting in’ at school and heaps of homework, some children have to struggle with learning disabilities. At a time of huge emphasis on academic excellence and inevitable comparisons among kids by adults, several children grapple with being the butt of cruel jokes, ridicule and humiliation. Because they struggle with studying and grasping new concepts for no fault of their own. As a result, they suffer loneliness, isolation and get frustrated.
But there is hope, with a growing awareness among parents and teachers with schools and independent organizations spending time researching the occurrence in order to effectively address the issue rather than chide a child and scar him for life.
That would explain the phenomenal success of the recent release Taare Zameen Par in India and abroad. Far from the formula blockbusters that our film industry diligently churns out, it made several parents and a nation wake up to the possibility called a learning disorder. That dyslexic and more severely autistic children, have a genuine problem learning or concentrating and do not try to be ‘difficult’ or ‘test your patience’.
Learning disabilities is an ‘umbrella’ term that comprises difficulties in academic and functional skills. It includes problems with spelling, writing, speaking, reading, reasoning and organizing information. Though a learning disability is not a sign of low intelligence, the person suffers from an abnormality in the manner the brain processes information. This prevents them from functioning at their intellectual age.
Some of the most common learning disabilities are:
ADHD, Autism and Dyslexia Attention Deficit Hyperactivity
Disorder (ADHD):
This is a disorder characterized by forgetfulness, hyperactivity and distractibility. It is generally found to affect those under the age of 19. It is a chronic problem and hence has no definite cure. It is tackled o changes in lifestyle behavioral modification, medication and counseling. Though it appear to be highly heritable, it has shown links to trauma and exposure to toxins as well. However, this is a controversial disorder with several critics questioning its causes, treatment and its very existence.
Autism:
Let your Children Enjoy it while it lasts
Autism is a brain development disorder that usually makes its presence evident before the age of three. It is characterized by impaired social interaction and communication, the most common signs being restricted and repetitive behavior. For example, a child who obsessively stacks cans or blocks on top of each other may be autistic. While autism is largely considered heritable, there are theories that suggest that it may be related to common childhood vaccines. However, this proposed cause lacks sufficient scientific evidence.
Dyslexia:
This is a learning disability that involves difficulty with language, especially in reading and spelling, and is different from due to improper instruction or visual or hearing deficiencies. Chromosomal abnormalities could be a possible cause of dyslexia. It is characterized by stuttering or stammering, cluttered or hesitant speech, difficulty in identifying similar looking or sounding words arid confusion in letter order. Although there is no cure for dyslexia, it can be controlled through suitable education or treatment.
