Hair Style Tips- Hair color Types – Temporary, Semi Permanent
It is important to know what each of these can do, to avoid disappointment-or-horror-with the results.
Temporary Hair Color
Most temporary hair colors work in conjunction with a shampoo washed into the hair, or in a rinse that is applied after shampooing, simply coating the surface of each strand of hair without penetrating the cuticle and cortex. They can enhance your natural color by adding warmth and glow and bring out highlights. Or can be used as a toner on hair that is already colored or bleached.
A temporary color rinse is particularly effective on hair that has become brassy looking, and will tone down the yellow and green notes to a softer, ashen shade. This type of hair color lasts only from one shampoo to the next, and is best on shades that are already pale. Most will make little difference to the looks of dark hair.
Semi permanent color
Semi permanents are great because they don’t strip the hair so much and you can get really rich, multi-dimensional colors that are less ‘flat’ than some permanent colors. Color washes are great to freshen up color in-between treatments and give an amazing burst of shine to reawaken the hair.

Semi permanent hair colors are usually shampooed into the hair, and their effect lasts from four to eight shampoos, depending on the brand. Some shades – red tones especially- are prone to rapid fading. Although these products are designed to penetrate the cuticle of the hair, they do not alter the natural pigmentation structure-they are effectively coating the cortex with color.
Since you are only adding color to the hair, a major change cannot be achieved with these products. But natural looking glints of gold and chestnut shades are possible on all brown shades, and warm auburn lights can be achieved on very dark shades. Semi permanent hair colors that promise to lift natural hair color to blonde shades must necessarily contain bleaching agents. These are not recommended for use at home, since bleaching can be a complicated procedure and should be carried out professionally if the end result is to be even.
Difference between Chemical colorants and traditional colorants.
There are indeed less chemical hair colorants available on the market, that work just as effectively as mainstream colorants, meaning that customers needn’t compromise on quality. Naturtint, for example, is a less chemical colorant different from many traditional formulas as it is free from ammonia, resorcinol and parabens. These ingredients, particularly ammonia and resorcinol, can be very aggressive and cause a lot of damage to the cuticle, as well as being irritating to the skin. They can create small openings in the cuticle, allowing the color to wash away quickly and making the hair appear coarse and damaged. By removing these ingredients, Naturtint is much less aggressive and damaging to hair, meaning that the hair will remain in a healthier condition for longer. Customers should always remember, however, that even with less chemical colorants, a skin test should still be carried out before every use, as some chemicals do of course have to be used. Carrying out a skin and strand test 48 hours before applying any color will ensure that you do not have an unexpected allergic reaction, or indeed an unexpected color result.
